Our history
On the initiative of a small group of parents, around 15 children began their first school year in premises located in the garden of the French Consulate. This was the beginning of the French school of Dusseldorf which, from the following year, was linked to Strasbourg Academy in order to ensure that the education provided was recognised by the French Ministry of National Education.
The school moves to its own premises at 220 Graf-Recke-Strasse.
The school was the victim of an arson attack. The premises were consumed by the fire and had to be demolished. Rebuilding work quickly followed. The local authorities supported the school by helping to reduce the amount of red tape involved and lessons were able to resume in September at the Greek school on Hermannplatz. At the end of April 1986, lessons were able to start in our new building.
The school went on to open classes for Seconde (UK Y11 / US 10th grade), Première (UK Y12 / US 11th grade) and Terminale (UK Y13 / US 12th grade) becoming a fully-fledged Lycée (sixth form / high school). So that the school could cater for this new offering, the school’s Parent Teacher Association, led by the first Head Teacher/Principal, Mr Portzer, decided to invest in a new building to house 8 classrooms and a laboratory.
Expansion of the Maternelle (UK nursery - Y1 / US nursery - kindergarten) and the creation of 4 new classrooms with an independent entrance as well as a maintenance room and basement storage.
After a year of construction, the new building was ready for use. Housing a canteen, eight classrooms, two practical work rooms and four offices for the administrative team.
Innovation at the start of every school year: this change was to reflect the image of our school, starting the school year with our new logo.
Completion of a new 3-storey building incorporating classrooms, language labs for the Élémentaire (elementary school), a lift to provide access for disabled people, classrooms for the Secondaire (secondary school), Vie Scolaire offices (pastoral care and safeguarding) and a vast library on the middle floor, classrooms for the Secondaire including an art/music room, 2 fully equipped laboratories, a preparation room, a teachers’ lounge and a student lounge for Lycée students on the top floor.
New sports facilities opened: An 850 sq m multi sports pitch, play area, athletics track, table tennis and a pyramid climbing net for the Primaire (primary school). The Maternelle play areas have also been renovated and improved with new paving, 50 sq m of rubber safety flooring, new games, swings and a 4m x 8m sandpit.
Our school website has been fully redeveloped to give current and future parents a clearer appreciation of our values, how we operate and the educational programmes as well as to acknowledge the achievements and successes of our students.
